Spring Cleanse 2013: Day 6, March 16, 2013

A beautiful, relaxing Saturday, one with many temptations easily overcome by creativity and rest.

INTAKE, OUTTAKE and LESSONS LEARNED:

  • Wake up 7am
  • 2-3 cups black coffee
  • Breakfast: apple, sunflower seed, coconut, banana, goji berry muesli
  • Snack: freshly picked pomelo, grapefruit and orange!image
  • Lunch: 3 collard green “burritos”: homemade guacamole, homemade salsa, sprouts and black olives
  • One hour NAP in the afternoon…glorious!
  • Beach for sunset—where bottled beer would usually be my accompaniment, I made a quart of fresh squeezed pomelo and ruby red grapefruit juice. It was AMAZING! Just the color of sunset.image
  • Dinner: Celery with remaining homemade salsa, one green apple with homemade raw almond butter, handful of almonds and goji berries.
  • Late night: vanilla sleepytime tea and a long bath, with self-care regimen of raw honey and coconut oil face mask and raw honey, coconut oil and apple cider vinegar hair mask. image
  • Bedtime: 12:30am

GOING INTO TOMORROW: I still have not been, er, eliminating as I would like. This happens to me every time I cleanse with raw food. Why? Curious. I will begin tomorrow with juice and try to consume as many liquid meals as possible; perhaps this will help. Also becoming more and more obvious to me as I sleep more hours is my body’s need to re-engage in a more rigorous yoga practice.

Spring Cleanse 2013: Day 5, March 15, 2013

Thankfully, no one woke up vomiting this morning. Though with my morning coffee and no food until lunchtime, I finally—ahem—eliminated. Why is it always Day 5 for me? Today’s big discovery was the beauty that happens when almonds and goji berries rendezvous. I think I’m onto something. Otherwise a very productive, energetic, patient, lovely day, ending with a restaurant excursion that saw me steadfastly RAW and enjoying every bite—though the Friday-night-ness of it all did tempt me, I reminded myself of my energy levels and kept on keepin’ on.

INTAKE, OUTTAKE and LESSONS LEARNED:

  • Wake up: 7:45
  • 2 cups black coffee
  • Just not hungry…then quite hungry!
  • 2 collard wraps with cashew cheese, tomatoes, sprouts and radishes
  • One helping of caprese salad
  • Afternoon coffee
  • Snack at little league: almonds and goji berries (OMG) and 1 granny smith apple; huge bottle of water
  • Dinner at restaurant: salad with romaine, sprouts, artichoke hearts, carrots, tomatoes, avocado, sunflower seeds, oil and vinegar, water
  • Late night snack: vanilla rooibos tea with goji berries and almonds

GOING INTO TOMORROW: No juice or smoothie today! Must remedy that tomorrow. Also no exercise or meditation—but peace, play, productivity. Refusing any guilt for what did not receive my attention today but rather thankful for what did, and for what matters.

Spring Cleanse 2013: Day 4, March 14, 2013

And the virus continues. Woke up this morning at 6:15 to the sound of my eldest son vomiting. Due to a good night’s sleep I hopped up, comforted him, hit ‘brew’ on the coffee maker and set out to nurse my family back to health for yet another day. The level of energy, steady motivation and patience I had was thoroughly enjoyable.

INTAKE, OUTTAKE and LESSONS LEARNED:

  • Wake up: 6:15am
  • 3 cups black coffee (hey, it was early)
  • Breakfast: apple, banana, coconut, almonds, bit of raw honey
  • Water water water
  • Dose of immune supporting mushrooms and Vira-stop 2X: Enzymatic supplement brought to me by a dear friend
  • JUICE before heading out into the world to hunt for provisions for my weakened tribe: carrot, orange, garlic, ginger, apple, mango.
  • Lots and lots and lots of errands. No exercising, no meditation, but I somehow found time to prepare for my vision board, weed the entire garden, and stock home office supplies, including everything I need to FINALLY file my cluttered paperwork.
  • Snack: sweet peppers with last of ‘caesar’ dressing and a handful of almonds.
  • Dinner: A very, very large salad of hand-picked kale and beet greens, fresh spinach, tomato, mango, avocado, cilantro, cucumber, pepitas, lemon, EVOO and sea salt.
  • Eldest son stopped the vomiting around dinner time. More vision boarding, collaging with kids, movie time, massive tickle fight.
  • Midnight snack: vanilla rooibos tea, banana dipped in cacao and coconut, sliced strawberries.
  • It’s midnight. I think I will consciously skip the meditation tonight and snuggle right on into my good book and a good sleep. So bedtime…approx. 12:30 am.

GOING INTO TOMORROW: I somehow feel that this illness has escaped me for a reason. I know I have a strong immune system to begin with but the resistance to stomach virus coinciding with this cleanse is too interesting. I have the clarity and presence of mind to care for my loves with ample energy, which I have needed with the constant laundry, cooking, pouring, cleaning, wiping, tucking, bathing, reading, game playing, movie watching—a return to the basics, to the MOTHERING I love so much without all of the other layers of my life constantly competing for attention. Yet I have also gotten the things done for work that need to be done, and many chores around the house. How? Is it sleep? Is it the clarity from the cleanse? I don’t want it to stop (though I do want my people well!!). Tomorrow I hope to be as present. I will need to exercise, to meditate, to work…but without feeling pulled away. I will ebb and flow through the moments of the day on the wave instead of against it. Also hoping to sneak in just a little saltwater healing.

Spring Cleanse 2013: Day 3, March 13, 2013

I felt superb today. Normally I would be in full on funk by now, but sleep cures all. I got almost TEN HOURS OF SLEEP last night. UNHEARD of. I have not yet meditated today but I did get a kettlebell workout in and plan to meditate just before bed. I was much more patient and kind with my boys and felt productive, alert and efficient.

INTAKE, OUTTAKE, AND LESSONS LEARNED:

  • Wake up: 9:45!!!!!! ZOINKS!
  • Black coffee
  • Power smoothie for early lunch: spinach, kale, one orange, one freshly juiced Granny Smith apple, green grapes, chia seeds, one frozen banana, some distilled water, and a handful of goji berries. image
  • Many many errands. Not enough water.
  • Snack: sweet peppers and leftover ‘caesar’ dressing.
  • 20 minute kettlebell workout.
  • Dinner: OMG. Caprese salad from this recipe, just added balsamic. It was so good I had THREE HELPINGS. That’s three huge plump tomatoes worth. image
  • Big glass o’ water.
  • Kava tea. More water.
  • Intention to meditate when I finish this blog post (mantra: my mind and body are in perfect sync), read a bit, and be asleep by 11:30.

GOING INTO TOMORROW: Sleep is the root of good health. I know I am behind on work but this restoration was desperately needed. Skipping the bridge tomorrow but will continue daily meditation. Looking forward to salt therapy, beach style, in the coming days.

Spring Cleanse 2013: Day 2, March 12, 2013

My respectable post-New-Moon-Circle bedtime of 12:30 was thwarted by the post-Disney-World stomach virus that rampaged through my youngest son. From 12:30 to 4:30, he was sick every fifteen minutes, then every hour (and still going at 10:30 am). Needless to say, I did not walk the bridge this morning. I am gentle with myself and forgiving this lack of sleep, thankful for the honor of snuggling him up, making him warm lavender baths and hot peppermint tea, reading him stories and being inspired by his bravery. I am feeling well, and will continue the cleanse and meditation challenge as long as I feel healthy and strong.

INTAKE, OUTTAKE AND LESSONS LEARNED:

  • Wake up: Um, not really applicable here. For the day, 9am. But that’s after intermittent five minutes here and there all night long. I would say a total of 4 to 5 hours, choppy.
  • 2 cups black coffee.
  • Breakfast: 1 chopped granny smith apple, handful chopped raw almonds, sprinkle of shredded coconut, teaspoon of raw honey, dash of cinnamon. YUM.
  • Lunch: 2 raw collard wraps with leftover cashew ‘caesar’ dressing from day 1 and stuffed with tomatoes, spinach, sprouts, radishes.image
  • Snack: Handful of grapes, celery sticks dipped in ‘caesar’ dressing, handful of almonds.
  • Snack: Granny Smith Apple and Calm Tea
  • PITCHER OF LEMON WATER
  • Dinner: big bowl of kale tabouli (kale massaged with EVOO and lemon juice, processed almonds, tomatoes, cucumbers, leeks, sea salt)image
  • Meditation bath, 20 minutes (mantra: Balance is my true nature)
  • Chinese herbs for shingles
  • Bedtime: midnight +/-

GOING INTO TOMORROW: I lost my temper BIG TIME today with my boy. I recognize that lack of sleep plays a tangible role in my parenting. I will insist on rest, virus or no virus in my household. I will find a way to exercise. I will realize my intention of being in the flow of positive energy and love. All else may step aside, for it is most unwelcome. Also, I’m two days in and still have yet to juice, or make a smoothie. I wanted MORE juice, MORE smoothies. Must begin tomorrow!

Spring Cleanse 2013: Day 1, March 11, 2013

Here we go again. After almost a full year of Paleo living (and loving it!), I’m ready for another balancing cleanse to kick off the spring. Woke up this morning on the New Moon in Pisces to begin a ten day raw food experience (ending on the Equinox) and a 21 day meditation challenge at Disney World, perhaps the last place such endeavors should be undertaken. But I persevered and am feeling excited and grateful for the journey.

INTAKE, OUTTAKE, AND LESSONS LEARNED:

  • Wake up: 9:00am (wow!)
  • 2 cups black coffee
  • Meditation - 10 minutes (mantra: I commit to living perfect health.)
  • No breakfast
  • Glass of water
  • Salad with romaine, tomato, red onion, celery, EVOO and balsamic for lunch
  • 2 more glasses of water
  • Stocking up at Whole Foods—UNDER BUDGET! (skipped luxuries like dulse and miso and raw tahini; instead filled cart with basics, fruits, veggies, inexpensive nuts, a few staples for kids)
  • Huge salad with 'caesar' dressing for dinner
  • Made strawberry date bars for New Moon Circle (probably had too many)
  • 2 full mugs of Nettles / Peppermint tea
  • BEDTIME: 12:30 am

GOING INTO TOMORROW: Be gentle with myself. Find the pause. Take it easy and have fun with my children. It is Spring BREAK, after all. A time of rest and renewal. A time of clearing and cleansing. New beginnings.

Mango Gazpacho: 4 plum tomatoes, 1/2 vidalia onion, 1/2 jalapeno, 1/2 bunch cilantro, 1/2 cucumber, 1 mango, pinch sea salt. The perfect summer lunch.
